BGS, a company that produces sunscreen specifically for melanin woman, recently secured a $1 million dollar investment from a private female funding source.
This is major news because BGS is the only black-owned brand carried in the sunscreen section of Target.
Traditionally, women of colour CEOs at the helms of businesses receive less than 1% of VC funding every year.
This is a great breakthrough and after the newest investment, the company is now valued at $5 million.
Who’s Behind BGS?
BGS (Black Girl Sunscreen) was launched in Miami in 2016 by Shontay Lundy as a response to a gap in the sunscreen market for women of colour.
Black Girl Sunscreen is an SPF 30 sunscreen and contains no parabens or other harmful chemicals.
It also contains moisturizing and antioxidant ingredients like avocado oil, jojoba oil, sunflower oil and carrot juice.
Black Girl Sunscreen is fragrance-free, vegan and cruelty-free. The brand also features a sunscreen for kids (SPF 50).
