There are times natural haired ladies want to switch up their looks and one of the ways we do that is via coloring our hair.
First up, coloring natural hair with commercial dyes isn’t a good idea and can lead to dry, brittle and damaged hair in the long term.
My top recommendation for coloring hair remains henna and indigo if you really want to change up your hair color.
With a few variations, you can achieve different hues from dark brown to dark red to jet black with henna and indigo.
However, if you still want to go ahead with color treating your hair with the commercial dyes, there are several things you can do to lessen the damage.
One of the things you can do is using a great shampoo created specifically for color treated hair.
Can You Use Shampoo for Color Treated Hair?
If you want to the color to last for a long time, then you definitely need to shampoo your hair at some point. However, you need to use the right kind of shampoo.
Shampoos created for color-treated hair won’t strip the color. The shampoo will help maintain color vibrancy and help it last much longer so you need to retouch less.

5 Tips for Making Color Treated Hair Last Longer
Using a shampoo created for color treated hair is just a tip of the color care iceberg. There are still a few things you need to do to make the color last longer and preserve healthy hair such as:-
1. Pay Attention to Your Hair
Stay hyper-vigilant when you’re color treating your hair. The damage isn’t always so obvious so every time you shampoo and deep condition, pay particular attention to your ends.
2. Avoid Heat
Avoid heat as much as possible while color treating hair. Heat increases the possibility of damage. Blow dryers, curling irons, flat irons, etc should all be avoided. Opt for roller sets and curl formers instead.
Moisture, moisture, moisture. Do not skimp on moisture. Deep condition your hair every week. The next article will discuss best deep conditioners for colored treated hair.
4. UV Filters Important
Color-specific shampoos all contain ingredients that protect the hair from UV rays, which can fade color quickly. Ensure the shampoo you choose offers UV protection.
5. Wear Protective Styles
Wear protective styles as much as you can and whatever you do, don’t go swimming with your colored hair. Wear a swim cap or an updo.
