If you have never used a scalp massage brush on your scalp, you are missing out on a good thing.
Remember when you were relaxed and went into a salon for a shampoo and set?
Do you recall how calm and sleepy you felt after the shampoo session at the basin?
It’s the same feeling times 10 with a scalp massage brush! Apart from that feeling, a scalp massage brush comes with even more benefits.
Using a scalp massage brush can transform your humdrum shampoo day into a relaxing and stimulating experience.
You will start looking forward to your regimen sessions every week, and miss it when you’re in a protective style.
Do you think I’m gassing the scalp massage brush up too much? Check out the benefits of a scalp massage brush below to see why.
What is a Scalp Massage Brush?
Scalp massages are a common thing. It has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine as an effective way to relieve stress and mental fatigue.
Scalp massages are also common when applying natural oils to hair and when shampooing and deep conditioning.
All these benefits are packed into a scalp massage brush. A scalp massage brush is a small, plastic device made with flexible bristles.
These flexible bristles are designed to do the work of manual massages. Some scalp massage brushes also have vibrating capabilities although this isn’t strictly necessary.
A scalp massage brush gently grips the scalp surface and provides a relaxing massage experience in addition to other benefits.
Additionally, you can control how much pressure you apply to the brush via the handle.
The Science Behind Scalp Massages
There are a lot of nerve endings on your scalp. When you use a scalp massage brush, you stimulate the nerves and capillaries.
By doing this, you soothe muscle stress around the head in addition to the other benefits for the scalp outlined below.
Scalp Massage Brush Benefits
1. A Scalp Massage Brush Provides Relaxing and Therapeutic Effects
A scalp massage brush provides a calming, relaxing, and therapeutic effect on your senses, especially when combined with aromatherapy products that stimulate the senses.
2. A Scalp Massage Brush Helps With Better Product Penetration
Combining a scalp massage brush with your treatments can help your products work even better. For instance, using during a shampoo session.
3. A Scalp Massage Brush Encourages Even Product Distribution
A scalp massage brush can aid in even product distribution all over your scalp.
It also helps distribute the scalp’s natural oils throughout your hair promoting soft and shiny hair.
4. A Scalp Massage Brush Removes Product Build Up

5. A Scalp Massage Brush Removes Dead Skin Cells
It exfoliates the scalp and removes any dead skin cells that may be causing clogged pores, dandruff, itchiness and/or psoriasis on your scalp.
6. A Scalp Massage Brush Stimulates the Follicles
This is by far the most important benefit of a scalp massage brush.
A good session will stimulate your follicles and increase blood flow to your scalp thus fostering an environment for hair growth.
As you can see, adding a scalp massage brush to your hair care regimen is just what your scalp ordered.
But how do you choose the right scalp massage brush? I’ve outlined the best 7 at the end of this article.
How to Use a Scalp Massage Brush
It is imperative to follow the directions below to prevent your hair from tangling while shampooing.
- Section your hair into 2 – 4 sections using butterfly clamps like this one.
- Take down one section and wet slightly then apply your shampoo.
- Smooth through with your fingers then wrap your hand around the scalp massage brush handle (turn on if using an electronic massager), press against your scalp and move gently around your scalp area only. Do not run the scalp massage brush through your strands.
- Hold your hair stretched downwards with one hand while massaging with the other hand gripped around the scalp massage brush.
- You can massage that section for 3 – 5 minutes then pin up and repeat with the other sections.
- Unpin all sections and rinse.
- Continue with the rest of your regimen.
