Signs of High Porosity Hair

High porosity hair has highly raised and/or chipped cuticles which are usually caused by overuse of heat treatments, chemical hair coloring, and over-manipulation of hair strands.

High porosity hair tangles easily because of frayed ends and it’s very hard to keep moisture within high porosity hair because of the raised cuticles.

Focus on repairing the damage before length. This is the best way to grow hair porosity hair.

The products recommended in this article are the best shampoos, daily conditioners, deep conditioners, and leave-in conditioners for high porosity hair.

I have also included natural oils, natural butter, and other styling products for the optimal care of high porosity hair.

The list originally started as the 50 best products for high porosity hair but it has grown to 115 recommendations.

I will continue to add more product recommendations as I test and research.

9 Dos and Donts for High Porosity Hair

1. Strengthening Treatments

You need to strengthen high porosity hair. Protein treatments work very well in this regard as do henna and indigo treatments every 8 – 10 weeks.

2. Avoid Heat Appliances

Stay away from all forms of heat and let your hair air dry as much as possible. This does not apply to hair steaming.

3. Avoid Products With Harsh Chemicals

Avoid shampoos with sulfates, alternative forms of sulfates, and other harsh chemicals when cleansing high porosity hair.

4. Moisture Sealing is Important

Seal moisture in high porosity hair with heavy butter like shea butter, mango butter, murumuru butter, and cupuacu butter as well as natural oils.

A combination of the two is best and more effective than just the butter or just the oil.

5. Close Cuticles Properly

Use an ACV (apple cider vinegar) mix as a final rinse to close cuticles on high porosity hair properly. That’s 1 – 2 tablespoons of ACV to your rinsing water.

6. More Co-washing

Co-wash high porosity hair often and clarify less. This doesn’t mean avoiding shampoo completely. Choose shampoos that are free of harsh surfactants.

7. Finger Detangling is Bae

Finger detangle high porosity hair as much as possible but if you must use a detangling tool, a very wide-tooth comb like a bone comb is best. Stay away from hair brushes and tail combs.

For more information on detangling hair, read Best Detangling Brush for Curly Hair and Combing Natural Hair.

8. Pre-poo Often

Pre-pooing high porosity hair protects the hair from the drying effects of any other products, provides nourishment, and makes it easier to detangle hair.

You can find my favorite pre-poo recipes at 5 DIY Pre-Poo Recipes for Dry Hair. I also love pre-pooing with aloe vera juice.

9. Deep Condition More

Deep conditioning treatments are the best friend of high porosity hair. Deep conditioning reduces dry effects, strengthens hair, softens hair, and makes hair more manageable.

When you deep condition regularly, your hair will be more receptive to other products and set your hair on the road to a quick recovery.

  5. Do you recommend using rice water on high porosity hair? I also use Cantu Shea butter sulfate free cream shampoo and Renpure Originals Biotin & Collagen conditioner because I do color my hair. Are these products you would recommend for my hair. When I did the porosity test, my hair sank like a rock in less than 30 seconds
